4th European Forum: “Participation and Citizenship – Can Cultural Institutions in Europe lead the way? Should they?” Taking place in Brussels on the 5th/6th June 2012.

This event will explore cultural participation as an element of “active citizenship” and ask what role cultural institutions play. If cultural democracy requires a full polyphonic representation of social and ethnic diversity, are public cultural institutions the needed spaces for encounter and interaction? Do public policies help cultural institutions launch significant intercultural processes, outreach and organisational re-invention?

This Forum will bring together academics, cultural practitioners and NGO activists who work for interculturalism. It takes place in the context of the Platform for Intercultural Europe’s involvement in the Structured Dialogue between the EU with Civil Society.

The Forum will be followed by our General Assembly of Members (non-members interested in membership can attend it as guests).

The European Commission will kindly sponsor our annual meeting once more with the use of their premises and catering on the second day, some travel subsidies for our members and the registration management.
Founded in 1978, Musicworks is arguably Canada’s most unique music magazine. Musicworks reports on the world of experimental sound adventures, and is renowned around the world for the depth and perspective in its discussion of sound. Beginning as a supplement to Only Paper Today, Musicworks has now become the go-to source for all that falls outside the confines of the musical mainstream. Daring to publish tomorrow’s music, Musicworks magazine focuses on composers, musicians, improvisers, instrument designers, and artists who work in radio, sound installation, and sound sculpture. Musicworks publishes three issues each year, each with an accompanying CD, and is about to launch a redeveloped website complete with blogs, audio and video streaming, a searchable back issue collection, and more. The magazine is distributed internationally and has an inclusive mandate to introduce all forms of sound exploration to adventurous listeners.

“I enjoy the magazine because it is so devoted to a tradition that this country excels in. We have produced great composers, and Musicworks celebrates this. The CDs are an invaluable bonus, and I look forward to the extraordinary sonic journeys each issue provides me with.” – Atom Egoyan

The Roberto Cimetta Fund (RCF), launched in 1999, aims to support artistic mobility between Europe, the Arab world and Mediterranean countries in order to rebalance the flow of artistic production and respond to the Development Goals by putting into practice the principles of many cultural policy agendas (Agenda 21 for Culture, the UNESCO Convention, European Agenda for Culture) in the spirit of the Declaration of Fribourg on Cultural Rights.

In collaboration with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Guimarães, European Capital of Culture 2012, RCF will be organising a one-day event on the theme « International Artistic Mobility and Territorial Diplomacy » on Thursday 24th May 2012 at the Cultural Centre Vila Flor, Guimarães, Portugal. A presentation document is attached in English, Arabic and French. The seminar is conceived as an informal gathering of stakeholders. The format of the day’s programme is divided into two parts: the morning will be a closed session for the Board members, experts and funders of RCF and additional invited guests; the afternoon will be a public debate, open to all, where participants can voice their opinions openly and meet panellists directly during speed-meetings.

50 key stakeholders (artists, cultural operators, local and regional representatives or institutions) from 8 Arab, 7 European and 3 Mediterranean countries will be able to discuss the complex issues at stake in the Euro-Arab region, further dialogue and develop local and regional strategies for artistic mobility.

At a time when geographical concepts are adapting to the new axes of global exchange and alliances are being formed at regional and local levels as a consequence of the building of Europe, RCF would like to reassert the need for a cultural partnership between Europe and the Arab world. Investing in artistic mobility is not only an individual moment of political responsibility but has long term spin-off effects on the appropriation of global cultural products, identity building and new forms of cultural expression that can be source of renewal in the country of residence as well as the country of origin.

Registration is free. The programme can be downloaded at www.cimettafund.org.
